How to Grow Out Your Hair the Healthy Way

Growing your hair out can feel like an endless waiting game of split ends and awkward lengths. Here's how to do it properly, so the length you grow stays strong, healthy and worth keeping.

Growing your hair out is mostly a patience game, but patience alone won't get you there. The most common reason a grow-out stalls is breakage, with split ends quietly costing you length at the bottom while you wait for it to arrive at the top. The goal isn't just longer hair, it's healthy length you actually want to keep. Here's how we approach it at BIBA.

Keep trimming, just less

It feels backwards, but the fastest way to long hair is to keep cutting it. A light dusting of the ends every ten to twelve weeks removes splits before they travel up the strand and snap. Skip trims entirely and those splits climb, which means more breakage and less length than if you'd kept them in check. Think of it as protecting the length you've already grown.

Mind the awkward in-between stages

Every grow-out hits a phase where the shape feels lost, usually around the jaw and shoulders. Rather than chopping it all off in frustration, this is where a clever cut earns its keep. Long layers, a soft face frame or a subtle reshape can keep your hair looking intentional while the length catches up. A good cut works with where you're headed, not just where you are now.

Protect the ends you've grown

The oldest hair sits at the very bottom, and it has seen the most washing, brushing and heat. Be gentle with it. Ease off the hot tools, always use a heat protectant, and detangle from the ends upwards with a wide-tooth comb rather than ripping through from the roots. A weekly treatment focused on the mid-lengths and ends keeps them strong enough to go the distance.

Feed it from the scalp out

Hair grows from a healthy scalp, so don't neglect it. Regular cleansing, the occasional scalp treatment and not over-washing all help keep the follicle happy. Realistic expectations help too, since most hair grows around a centimetre a month, so this is a season of slow, steady progress rather than an overnight change. Consistency is what wins here.
